An End to Pain

October 30, 2023 By Caleb Strauss

Heroic donors and volunteers provided dental care that saved him from his suffering.

In his first call to the clinic, 46-year-old Peter* was crying as he explained that the sharp edge of a broken tooth was cutting his tongue when he ate.

Could Genesis help him with the pain, asked Peter? He could no longer endure the torture but didn’t have any insurance and had not visited a dentist in 15 years.

The artwork Peter donated to Genesis hanging just outside the breakroom.

Peter was overjoyed to learn from the intake coordinator that he qualified for Genesis’ medical and dental programs. The successful treatment he received eliminated all his pain.

A few weeks later Peter returned to the clinic to express his gratitude with some of his artwork as a gift to the clinic.

More people like Peter need and wait for Genesis’ healthcare. Thank you for your support that will help transform more lives.

Navigating Blind: Rosita’s Story*

August 4, 2023 By Caleb Strauss

The gift of specialty care unlocked opportunities that transformed her life.

Rosita was stuck. At home. Alone… and going blind!

A newly arrived immigrant in her early fifties, Rosita remained isolated at home while her husband worked long hours at a low-income job. Rosita was frightened.

Her life-threatening autoimmune disease, type I diabetes mellitus, was causing progressive blindness. Uninsured, Rosita couldn’t afford diabetic medication and supplies. Neither could she travel to medical appointments because her husband couldn’t take her during work hours.

The couple, without computer skills, couldn’t apply for needed resources. As a result, Rosita’s uncontrolled condition was accelerating her vision loss.

Genesis provides to low-income and uninsured patients
like Rosita the resources they need to regain health…and hope.

The couple’s needs were assessed by Genesis staff and volunteers using a donated interpreter app. With persistent advocacy and ingenuity, the team also established Rosita’s eligibility to receive care and training through the Idaho Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired (ICBVI). The team further located transportation for the couple and coordinated assistance from family members in the area.

Caring Genesis volunteers and staff now help Rosita manage her healthcare needs. Her diabetic condition has improved, her blood sugar levels are normalizing, and she receives home visits from an ICBVI instructor. Using a cane for the blind, Rosita now scans and maneuvers her environment successfully. Today, she lives with hope in her heart!

More people like Rosita need and wait for Genesis healthcare. Thank you for your support that will help transform more lives.

The Gift of Healing for Julietta

December 16, 2022 By Caleb Strauss

The news felt like a hard punch to her stomach, and Julietta* was frightened.

An ultrasound had revealed an abnormality in her breast, and a biopsy was necessary… but Julietta couldn’t afford one. She left the testing facility overwhelmed with worry. Not only was Julietta concerned about cancer, the disease that took her mother’s life, but she also was worried about her family’s finances. She had lost her job recently and had a young daughter to support.

Her situation worsened when her husband died suddenly! With her limited English, Julietta didn’t know where to turn.

Thankfully, the testing facility had referred Julietta to Genesis. Following her first medical appointment, a biopsy and dental care were scheduled, and a prayer request for Julietta was added to the prayer list.

A bilingual Genesis staff member also helped connect Julietta to community partners in the Genesis network who assisted her with rent and utilities.

Genesis cared for Julietta during her cancer surgery and radiation treatments. Her most recent visit to the oncologist who participates in the Genesis Volunteer Physician’s Network brought good news.

A jubilant Julietta learned that because her cancer had been detected and treated early, it was now in remission.

Having been given the gift of health and peace of mind, Julietta’s outlook for the future is a hopeful one.

A God-Appointed Call For Helen

November 22, 2022 By Caleb Strauss

The timing of “Bob’s” frantic call to Genesis was miraculous.

His wife “Helen” had nearly died from a recent heart attack. Upon her release from the hospital, she suffered another cardiac event that led to her second hospitalization.

Now Helen was being released again and urgently needed a CPAP machine to use at home. Unfortunately, none would be available from medical equipment suppliers for another six months due to a supply chain backlog!

Providentially, a few weeks earlier, Genesis had received an unexpected donation: a supply of CPAP machines! When Bob called Genesis in his desperate search for one, the Genesis clinic in Caldwell was especially delighted to help because CPAP machines are rarely donated to Genesis. In His perfect timing, God already had provided for Helen.

We’re so thankful God continues to provide healthcare through people like you and Genesis for our neighbors in need!

This Thanksgiving, you can help bring improved health and hope to more low-income and uninsured people in the Treasure Valley.

Renewed Hope For Clay

November 15, 2022 By Caleb Strauss

A visibly downcast Clay* walked into the Genesis clinic in Garden City, Idaho. He had been referred by St. Luke’s Humphreys Diabetes Center hoping Genesis would care for him.

Lisa, the front office coordinator, attentively listened to Clay as he described his situation.
He explained that without medication and medical care, he couldn’t control his
type 1 diabetes.

Clay was an employed family man. Unfortunately, his salary couldn’t cover the combined expenses of medication, medical insurance, and the cost of living.

It was an all-too-familiar case: having to choose between food and rent over health care.
But at Genesis, happy endings take place every day …

When Lisa informed Clay that the Genesis diabetics treatment team would help him stabilize his condition at no cost, his face lit up with renewed hope!

Genesis immediately registered Clay as a patient. He was now eligible for free periodic visits with a specialist, medication, and meetings with a dietician. He even was equipped with a blood pressure cuff on that first visit to monitor his high blood pressure.

He left the clinic feeling on top of the world!

Today, Clay’s diabetes is being managed at the Genesis Canyon County Clinic in Caldwell, Idaho, close to his home. He is working consistently with the medical and diabetes care teams of volunteers.

Nancy’s New Life

July 21, 2022 By Caleb Strauss

A little over a year ago, Nancy’s* vision had deteriorated to the point where she couldn’t see well enough to work. Anxious and frustrated, she came to the Genesis clinic in Caldwell for help. The volunteer providers discovered that both her blood pressure and blood sugar were dangerously out of control.

With care, her blood sugar began to improve after the first few appointments but her blood pressure was still high. Our staff then got Nancy a cardiology appointment with a specialist who volunteers in the Garden City clinic. He discovered the source of the issue and helped her get her blood pressure under control.

After a lot of hard work and follow up, Nancy’s blood pressure and blood sugar returned to normal levels. As she began to regain her physical health, she was able focus on other important areas of her life. She was able to get a new job, move to an affordable home in West Treasure Valley, and got health insurance. Today, Nancy is an established patient with a local primary care provider—and is living with a new confidence to face whatever life throws at her.

On her last visit at Genesis before transitioning to her new primary care provider, she thanked the incredible staff and volunteers at the Caldwell location, saying she had never received such high-quality care in a place where people genuinely cared about her.
